This developing new wireless technology to further a reduced manning initiative in the Navy. The Sailor’s Wireless Maintenance Aid (SWMA) takes advantage of advanced technology to bring experts’ knowledge to the shipboard systems maintainer. In the Navy, Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) are usually in high demand and their availability is the limiting factor in how fast problems get solved. Thhis contract is developing a system that makes use of the following technologies to maximize the effect of SMEs through Distance Based Maintenance: IEEE 802.11a/b/g, Ultra Wideband, Bluetooth, H.323 communications protocol, T.120 application sharing protocol, and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). Through the use of these technologies, the Cybernet SWMA links technicians to remote experts via wireless networking. The SWMA provides hardware and software to give a naval technician access to a wide range of support, including maintenance documents, technical documents, and graphical files. In addition, the technician shares audio and video data from the maintenance site with an SME, who can lend their experience to the technician. The SME can reside anywhere (onboard or on-shore), providing assistance to many technicians without being physically present at the repair/maintenance site.
